Fixing “Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model” on older intel macs

If you have encoutered the error “Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model” on an older model intel mac then do the following to get things installed:

  1. Launch CMD.exe as an administrator. You can do this by right-clicking on it and selecting RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR or left-clicking on it while holding CTRL+SHIFT to do the same.
  2. Traverse to your boot camp installation directory
  3. Execute the following command: msiexec /i Bootcamp64.msi

Boot Camp x64 software and drivers will now install.

  1. Thank you so much, ive tried like 5 different solutions until i found this one , EZ and clear Ty again.

  2. Thx a lot, it works!!!

  3. use imac 9,1 and installing Mountain Lion. Bootcamp 5.0. Only this method works. Earlier way of setting compatibility problem would not work. CMD must be in ROOT and not admin. Installing Windows 7-64 ultimate.

    Thanks

  4. Thx a lot !!

  7. Hi. Can you tell me where to find bootcamp installation directory?

    • Hi David,

      Good question!
I don’t have my copy of the bootcamp software with me at the moment but I found something online that says it is here: WindowsSupport/Boot Camp/Drivers/Apple
This should be with the folder with the Bootcamp64.msi

  8. Worked like a charm. Tried several other methods but each one failed. Thanks so much!

    • No problemo.

  9. Thank you so much, after hours of installation this predicament was a real punch to the gut. This worked flawlessly though, you’re my hero.

  10. Just installed windows on my older iMac and get error message “Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model”.

I read the above but as I’m not to familiar with doing this stuff I do not understand how and where I can find “CMD.exe”. Searching my computer I find lots of cmd…. files but not exactly one that matches CMD.exe.
    Can anybody help ;-)

    • Yes I can help you here:
cmd.exe is already on the windows system. Open up the “run menu”. This is usually found in the Start Menu and then selecting “Run”. You can also open it up by pressing WindowsKey+R. Once you have this Run window up, you type in “cmd” and then hit enter. You will now have the command (cmd) prompt window open.

  11. Thank you so much! Worked perfectly!!

  12. Hi. I’ve tried to do this, but I’ve got the message “This installation requires elevated privileges. Launch the installer through setup.exe”. Did I miss something? Or Apple just closed with pass in the bootcamp 4.0?

    • Sorry, this way works fine, I just didn’t run CMD as admin :)

  13. Oh thank you so much!! Oh thought I didn’t manage to get it to run as administrator by holding CRTL+SHIFT, however I managed to run as administrator the other way and it worked. Thanks again!

    • You’re very welcome. Glad it worked out.
